The research doesn’t focus on the diversity of Asian Americans or the particular problems that Asians of different origins face. Some Asian Americans do indeed become doctors and lawyers and earn impressive salaries. Others, however, work in restaurants, supermarkets, and nail salons. They work hard just to get by.Although many Asian Americans were born in the US, others are also new immigrants. The designation of Asian Americans covers many countries, including Bangladesh, Myanmar, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. There is in fact great diversity, both social and economic, within the group labeled Asian American.Much is made of the role that parenting plays in the education and career success of Asian Americans. However, most research in this field has concentrated on Korean, Chinese, and Japanese parenting. In fact, the US Census Bureau has shown that Asian American adults are less likely to have finished high school than Caucasians. It also shows that Southeast Asians, including Cambodian, Laotian, and Vietnamese Americans, are among those least likely to hold a college degree. (9/7)
