四、閱讀測驗 (6%)(每題 2 分,共 6 分)      The most popular number on shirts in Taiwan these days is probably 40, the number on thepitcher Chien-Ming Wang's New York Yankees jersey. When a local convenience store chain solda limited edition of subway cards bearing Wang's picture, people lined up for two days, fightsbroke out and the police had to be called. Colleagues forgave a lawmaker who fell asleep during ameeting after he explained that, like many Taiwan residents, he had lost sleep watching a Yankeesgame that aired live in the middle of the night.     It is all part of Wang mania. As a matter of fact, Wang has turned America's pastime, alreadyfairly popular here, into Taiwan's passion. "He's like our national hero, he's like the only goodthing going on for us," said a senior lawmaker, who hopes to fly to the United States to watchWang pitch in at least one postseason game. Many who never took an interest in baseball beforehave become Wang fans. Nursing a beer near the signed Yankees' jersey at the sports bar, LinChih-Jen, a 28-year-old genetic researcher, said he seldom used to follow the game but now keeps on his refrigerator the front page of a newspaper with Wang's picture. "Before Wang, I didn'twatch baseball very often, but now I'm a Yankees fan," he said.       Wang's success this year has hurt the local league in the short run, by diverting attention fromlocal games. Attendance is down 30 percent this season, partly because of Wang but also becauseof a dispute last year. Local media accused players of taking payments from gamblers to playpoorly, much like the Chicago "Black Sox" scandal of 1919, and the players were expelled by theleague. A government inquiry has moved slowly, and the players have denied wrongdoing. Wang'spopularity could help the island's league in the long run, nevertheless, as more people becomeinterested in the game and as Taiwan becomes more important as a recruiting(徵募新成員)ground for the major leagues in the United States.       As more Taiwanese players head to the majors in the United States, more of their countrymenmay cross the Pacific and watch them play. Lin has applied to do a doctorate in genetic research atthe University of Connecticut, and already hopes to see a Yankees game for himself next year.
