五、閱讀測驗:10%(每題2分)    Accordingto a recently released report from the Ministry of the Interior(MOI), the marriage rate in Taiwan has been on the decline over thelast few years. Forinstance, only approximately 116,000 marriages were recorded inTaiwan in 2009, a decline of 32,000 from 2008. Thedrastic decline was attributed to the global economic downturn, whichled to a high unemployment rate in Taiwan. What’smore, the fact that 2009 was believed to be a “ku luan nien,” or“lonely phoenix year,” could be another reason to this record lowmarriage rate. Forsome locals, it is a superstition that young couples are likely tobreak up in certain years, which are noted as “lonely phoenixyears.”   Accordingto the MOI report, the number of first-time spouses in 2009 wasaround 200,000, the lowest figure in the past 40 years. Meanwhile, the average age of first-time husbands was 31.6 in 2009, while thatof the first-time brides was 28.9, which showed a rise of 0.5 yearsin both cases from the previous year. Notably,of the total number of new marriages recorded last year, 18.6%involved foreign spouses from China, Hong Kong, or Macau. Thisnew trend may have a profound impact on the structure of Taiwan’spopulation, culture, and economics in the future.
