VI. Reading Comprehension (5%)
(A)EmilyDickinson, one of the greatest poets in the English language, isalmost as famous for her mysteriously secluded life as for herpoetry. She never married, and after age 30 she almost never sawanyone outside of her family. She withdrew from social contact anddevoted herself in secret to writing.    Thenarrow boundaries of her secluded life could have limited her choiceof subjects when she wrote. Somehow Emily Dickinson found withinherself the imaginative resources to exceed and reach beyond suchboundaries. Her poems represent a broad range of imaginativeexperiences. They are rich in feeling, wide in their knowledge ofnature, books, and geography, and expansive in their vision.    WhenEmily wrote, she did not care about money or fame. Also, fearing thatshe might be misunderstood, she chose to publish only seven of hernearly 1800 poems during her lifetime. Whenshe died on May 15, 1886, of kidney disease, on her deathbed she toldher sister to burn all of her poems. So her sister had the poemspublished, and burned the originals!
