(D) Albert Einstein is rumored to have said, “If the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe, then man would only havefour years of life left.” Today, these words are ominous because the honeybee is in danger.A mysterious event has been taking place in the US, Europe, and here in Taiwan. It is called Colony Collapse Disorder(CCD), and beekeepers are reporting losses ranging from 30 to 80 percent of their bee colonies. The hives still contain honey,the queen bee, and some young bees, but no adult bees. The adult bees are not found dead outside the hives, though. Theysimply disappear. The cause is unknown, leaving mere suspicions about disease, chemicals, or probably global warming.This phenomenon could have terrible consequences. Honeybees are needed to pollinate many different plants. Withoutthem, crop yields would drop significantly and such things as Pennsylvania’s apple harvest would suffer dramatically. Theestimate is that every third bite of food eaten in America relies on the work of honeybees.Nature is a delicate balance of competition and cooperation, with countless actions by different creatures all contributingto this massive cycle of life. A remedy for CCD needs to be found before the second half of Einstein’s rumored quote comestrue: “No more bees, no more pollination, no more plants, no more man.”
