(A)Tsunamis triggered by an earthquake engulfed the Samoan islands and the island nation of Tonga on Sept. 29, killingmore than 150 people.The magnitude 8.0 quake was centered at about 190 km south of the nation of Samoa, formerly part of New Zealand, whichhas about 220,000 people, and American Samoa, a U.S. territory of 65,000 people. The islands are situated between NewZealand and Hawaii.      The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii indicated that it had issued an alert after the earthquake, but theresponse time, roughly 10 minutes, was too short for the residents of these areas. Four tsunami waves 4-6 meters high hitthe Samoan islands and reached up to 1.5 km inland.      “The devastation was complete,” said Samoan Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele. “In some villages absolutely nohouse was standing. All that was achieved within 10 minutes by the very powerful tsunami.” Tuilaepa said the death toll inSamoa was 110, mostly elderly and young children. In American Samoa, at least 31 people were killed. Officials in Tongasaid nine people were dead.      The U.S. Coast Guard sent help as well as a disaster assessment team. Neighboring countries like Australia and NewZealand also offered aid. The Australian Air Force sent planes carrying tons of humanitarian aid, aid officials and medicalpersonnel. New Zealand has already provided one million New Zealand dollars (US$710,000) for immediate aid.
