(34-35) In rual Taiwan, students want all the opportunities that kids in the city have. Yet it’s not always possible. Many teachers prefer tostay in the cities rather than work at a ruarl school. Because of this, Teach For Taiwan is sending graduates to Taiwanese coutryside toteach at down-and-out schools. Teach For Taiwan is run like a non-governmental organization, and offers a two-year program toteachers. It was founded by Anting Liu, a graduate of Princeton University. Liu, a native of Taichung, gave up a high-paying job in NewYork to return to Taiwan and help disadvantaged children. In 2012, she founded Teach for Taiwan. Right away, teachers were eager to join Teach for Taiwan. In the program’s first year, it received 187 applications for its eightteaching jobs. The organization now has 16 teachers who are working to reform the education system.
