VI. Reading 10% ( 2 points for each )  1. Chimpanzees, sometimes known as chimps, are famous for their intelligence and social behavior. Chimpanzees are also famous because they are the mammals most like humans. The hands of a chimpanzee are so dexterous that the animal can use tools. Chimps know how to use sticks to collect ants and rocks to crack nuts open. Sometimes they make tools to suit different purposes. Jane Goodall first discovered the great intelligence of chimpanzees in the 1960s. It surprised the world because, before Goodall’s discovery, humans thought they were the only species to make and use tools.Chimps inhabit rain forests, mostly in Africa today. They live in groups, each of which can number between 10 and 100 individuals. The chimp group shares a home range which is protected by fierce, dominant males. The males, led by the most powerful chimp, usually work together to defend the group and to hunt. They follow a certain social order to keep the group prosperous, but they can sometimes be very violent. A male chimp may attack another to display its power and thus to upgrade its social rank. Due to this, chimps are considered aggressive. However, no matter how aggressive chimpanzees may be, they are no rival to humans. Just a century ago, over 1 million chimps lived in the African forests. There are perhaps only 300,000 chimps left now. Besides disease, humans are their major threat. Chimps are often caught for medical research and used for experiments. Also, humans have cut down so many of their forests. Therefore, most chimpanzees can just call those reserves their homes today.
