(IV) Dear Mon,                   You can,t imagine what I came into on the Greyhound to Miami. As my friends and I were 46 about our Miami Beachplan, I noticed a man sitting alone in front of us. He was dressed in a plain, ill-fitting suit, his age 47 by his dusty face. Hewas there, totally frozen into some personal cocoon of silence. I remembered what you always taught me: Never hesitate togreet, especially to someone who seems to be in need, so I came to sit beside him and introduced myself. In the beginning, hedidn’t talk much, but he was a nice guy. So the next day, I encouraged him to join us for breakfast. After we returned to the bus,I sat with him again and after a while, Vingo, my new friend, slowly and painfully, told me about his story. He was returninghome after having been in jail for four years. He wrote to his wife that he was about to be released on parole and 48 if shewould take him back, she should put a yellow handkerchief on the big oak tree nearby their house. Stunned by his story, Icouldn’t say anything but “Wow.” Caught up in the approach of Vingo’s hometown, all of my friends and I were gettingnervous about what we were going to see. Vingo shut his eyes, his face tightening as if prepared to fight against anotherdisappointment. We 49 the window seats, looking out, hoping it would turn out to be a good ending. To our tearful relief,there stood the old oak tree with hundreds of yellow handkerchiefs like a banner of welcome 50 at the long-absent man.With the overjoyed cheering of us, the ex-con rose and made his way home. Amazing, isn’t it?
