It was the longest total solar eclipse of the 21st century.   In India, people used to believe that when an eclipse occurs, the sun was actually being eaten up by a demon snake called Rahu. People would go to the sacred River Ganges for protection. People today no longer believe in the demon Rahu, but they still go to the River Ganges to watch the eclipse.     In ancient China, people used to believe that a giant dog was eating up the sun.
