In sleep, a loss of awareness occurs; in hypnosisthere is a highly concentrated but relaxed awareness, which can be like daydreaming. When used as “hypnoanesthesia,”hypnosis does not stop the pain process; rather, the perception of the pain is altered. Only patients who are able to undergo deephypnosis, about one quarter of the population, are appropriate for this technique in surgery.
