問題詳情

(D) Visitors to Taiwan usually visit only Taipei and Kaohsiung. Although these two modern cities have a multitude of attractions, the mass rapid transit systems, skyscrapers, and traffic jams in both locations can be seen almost anywhere in the world these days. People may wonder whether there is any local culture still present on the island. Not until they visit Beigang will they be able to see the rich history and local culture of Taiwan.Near the border of Chiayi and Yunlin counties lies Beigang. At first, nothing seems to stand out about this agricultural town. With a population of tens of thousands, Beigang resembles most of its rural neighbors. Only when certain festivals occur does the town become a small city, with hundreds of thousands of devout Buddhist pilgrims descending on the Chaotian Temple, the most important structure dedicated to the goddess Matzu, protector of sailors and fishermen. Originally brought to Taiwan by a Buddhist monk from China in 1694, a statue of Matzu marks the temple as the epicenter of her worship. On March 24 of the lunar calendar, which usually falls in April, locals and pilgrims gather as one to carry the statue around town. Firecrackers and fireworks, dragon and lion dances, self-mutilating devotees, and the area’s best agricultural products are on display. This scene is rarely seen in the large cities around Taiwan. Moreover, a spectacle like this truly shows the roots of Taiwanese culture. The temple is an architectural masterpiece. Every wood pole and beam is delicately carved and painted. Four large stone dragons surround the temple. A traditional and intricate ceiling was built in an arched web style. Even the windows are adorned with fine paintings of Matzu and other local gods. Whether for art or religion, the temple is worth a visit any time of the year. During festivals, however, one can appreciate the intense feeling the followers of Matzu are renowned for. The excitement, glamour, and crowds are unforgettable. To really see and understand Taiwan, plan a visit to Chaotian Temple.
