問題詳情

(B) An old song says, “Love and marriage go together like a horse and carriage.” Not everyone agrees with that, though, and many humorists have made marriage an object of their jokes. For example, one funny guy said, “I never knew what real happiness was until I got married. And by then it was too late.” Old-time movie star and comedian Mae West claimed she never wed, although a man once showed up in Hollywood claiming that he was her husband. West denied it. “Marriage is a great institution,” she said, “but I’m not ready for an institution.” An institution is a term for a mental hospital. On that same theme of craziness, American writer Ambrose Bierce called love “temporary insanity, treatable by marriage.” He meant that people lose their senses when they fall in love, but that living together soon changes that. Bierce did not believe that “happy” and “marriage” belonged in the same sentence. Canadian playwright Raymond Hull shared Bierce’s opinion. “All marriages are happy,” he said. “It’s the living together afterward that causes all the trouble.”The Greek philosopher Socrates had something wise to say about all this complaining about marriage, which apparently went on even in ancient times. He understood that people are seldom happy with what they have--that’s just human nature. So, Socrates said, whether people decide to get married or to stay single, they will regret the decision that they made.
