(C) Scientists have imagined for decades about a future when robots will take over daily household chores andgive us more leisure time. Yet the types of robots introduced to the market so far have been more forentertainment than for practical uses.       Thanks to the lower costs and the improved performance of mass-produced computers, some smallcompanies are starting to offer consumers robots that can clean and maintain a household. The problem is thatthese products can attract only those consumers who are already crazy about robots, so the market remains toosmall. And as far as performance and price are concerned, they’re still no match for conventional appliances.         Last year, Friendly Robotics began selling a lawn-mowing robot called the Robomower. Thebattery-powered device does its job by moving randomly over the lawn. It takes a lot longer than a conventionallawnmower to get the job done, but at least it frees weekends for its owner. Some other companies are alsopromoting their robots for different purposes. Probotics is selling its vacuum-cleaner robots. And iRobotintends to start selling a home-security robot next year for about the cost of a notebook computer.      However, their appeal so far has been limited to robot enthusiasts and wealthy consumers. Experts havenoted that cheaper, conventional lawnmowers operated by humans still achieve better results than robots, andvacuum-cleaner robots tend to have trouble moving around furniture, cats and stairways. Even iRobotacknowledges that a home-security robot can’t take the place of a household alarm system.
