(A)
Bulimia, also called bulimia nervosa, is a psychological eatingdisorder. Diagnosed as its own eating disorder only in the 1980s,bulimia is characterized by episodes of binge-eating followed byinappropriate methods of weight control (purging) and excessive shapeand weight concerns. Inappropriate methods of weight control includevomiting, fasting, excessive use of laxatives and diuretics, orcompulsive exercising. A binge is an episode where an individual eatsa much larger amount of food than most people would in a similarsituation. Binge-eating is not a response to intense hunger. It isusually a response to depression, stress, or self-esteem issues.During the binge episode, the individual experiences a loss ofcontrol. However, the sense of loss of control is also followedby a short-lived calmness. Then a sense of self-loathing ensues. Thecycle of overeating and purging becomes an obsession and is repeatedoften.

Peoplewith bulimia can look perfectly normal. Most of them are of normalweight, and some may be overweight. Bulimics tend to be highachievers. It is often difficult to determine whether a person issuffering from bulimia. This occurs because bingeing and purging isoften done in secret. In addition, individuals suffering from bulimiaoften deny their condition.

Bulimiais a problem that can be overcome. If you have a family member withthe eating disorder, he or she needs a lot of support.
