V. Reading Comprehension (10%) (1)Adaptation is the transference of one artistic work to another. Film adaptation, forinstance, usually involves using a written work as the basis of a feature film. Some commonexamples of written works from which films are adapted are novels, biography, comic books,plays, and so on. Among these sources, theatrical works are often the most popular choice foradaptation. William Shakespeare has been humorously referred to as the most popularscreenwriter in Hollywood, for several of his renowned comedies and tragedies have beenmodified and transformed into movies. West Side Story, for example, got the inspiration for itsplot from Romeo and Juliet, while Twelfth Night cleverly became the muse for the film She’sthe Man. Similarly, hit Broadway shows are frequently adapted from and into various otherworks. The 2004 film The Phantom of the Opera is a prime example. It is an adaptation ofAndrew Lloyd Webber’s 1986 musical of the same name, which in turn was based on theFrench novel by Gaston Leroux. Directed by Joel Schumacher, the movie production hired LloydWebber as a co‐writer as well as a producer. The cast included Gerard Butler as the title role,Emmy Rossum as Christine, the heroine, along with many other brilliant acting talents. Thiskind of continual adaptive process is also seen in The Producer, a film that was adapted into aBroadway musical before being adapted again into a film. Despite some skepticism that theseadapted works of art lack creativity, it’s without a doubt they have captured the interest of alarge audience.
