India＇s Taj Mahal, the Great Wall of China, Jordan＇s Petra,Brazil＇s statue of Christ the Redeemer, Peru＇s Machu Picchu, Mexico＇s ChichenItza pyramid and the Colosseum in Rome have now replaced the original wonders, mostof which have long since vanished into the mists of time. Greece＇s Acropolis andCambodia＇s Angkor War failed to make the final cut. The Great Pyramid of Giza, theonly one of the original wonders of the ancient world still standing, was assured ofretaining its status in addition to the new seven after indignant Egyptian officialssaid it was a disgrace they had to compete. The other original wonders, alldestroyed, were the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the statue of Zeus at Olympia, thetemple of Artemis at Ephesus, the mausoleum at Halicarnassus, the Colossus of Rhodesand the lighthouse of Alexandria. Money raised by the New Seven Wonders organizationwill be used to fund restoration efforts worldwide, including a mission to recreatethe giant Bamiyan Buddha statue destroyed by the Taliban in Afghanistan. “We wantpeople to look at the world in a different way and appreciate their culture anddifferent cultures＂, said spokeswoman Tia Viering.
