The reality is that romantic love runs its course in 18 to 30 months.      Hazan interviewed 5,000 people from 37 different cultures and ran some medical tests on several couples for a study she conducted about love. She found that during courtship, three chemicals—dopamine, oxytocin and phenylethylamine—will produce chemical reactions in the brain and release the intense feeling we label “love.” Hazan also discovered that men are affected by these chemicals more quickly and probably more profoundly than women. However, the action of these chemicals can be equally powerful for both sexes, if transitory. “Love” lasts only long enough for couples to court, mate, and perhaps produce an offspring. Then, these chemicals lost their potency, and the sensation of “love” disappears. Love, in other words, appears to be a biological mechanism that helps the human race to breed. Hazan also claimed that once the thrill is gone, some people will look for new partners.   One woman, who had been married for 54 years, said that the sweaty-palm feeling she had toward her husband had disappeared after a couple of years. However, other ties made their relationship worth keeping.
