問題詳情

<C> Crop circles first appeared in the fields of southern England in the mid-1970s. Early circles were quitesimple, and simply appeared, overnight, in fields of wheat, rape, oat, and barley. The crops are flattened, thestalks bent but not broken. As the crop circle phenomenon gained popularity, formations have also been reportedin Australia, South Africa, China, Russia, and many other countries, frequently close to ancient religious sites.Circle-makers consider their practice an art. However, they still do secret work in the dead of night, and theynever claim credit for specific formations they created. Some explained that is because doing so would drain themystery of crop circles. The art form isn't just about the pattern making. The myths, the folklore and the energythat people give them are part of the art. John Lundberg, a graphic design artist, Web site creator, andacknowledged circle-maker said “It is pushing boundaries, opening new doors, working outside of the establishedmediums. It is the greatest art in the 20th century.”Adamantly opposing the crop-circle-as-art-form position are the “croppies”—researchers of the supernaturalphenomenon. They are merely curious, open to the existence of supernatural activity and willing to consider thepossibility that at least some of the circles were created by extraterrestrial forces. The phenomenon has become itsown science: cereology. Cereologists are quite vocal in their criticism of the admitted artists, accusing them ofbeing liars and agents in government disinformation campaigns. However, on the question of whether all such circles are human made, Lundberg is perched firmly on thefence. “I don't care. I have an open mind. It would be great if people could view circles as an art form. But really,to me, anyone can believe whatever they want to believe.”Hillary Mayell for National Geographic News August 2, 2002
