An NGO in Malaysia has opened the country’s first “baby hatch” for rescuing unwanted newborns, asauthorities battle increasing cases of abandoned babies. Modeled on similar services in Germany, Pakistan andJapan, the NGO says the facility will allow mothers to leave their babies anonymously. The hatch has a small doorwhich opens to an incubator bed on which a mother can place her baby. Once the door is closed an alarm bell willalert the NGO’s staff to the baby’s presence, after the mother has left. This way the baby can be kept safe, and themother’s identity never has to be known. Women, Family and Community Development Minister Shahrizat AbdulJalil told a local newspaper that the service, to be offered by the NGO OrphanCARE, would give desperatemothers an alternative to abandoning or killing their babies. Official statistics show 407 babies were abandoned between 2005 and 2009 in Malaysia, a Muslim-majoritycountry where abstinence from sex is expected until marriage, and abortions are not readily available. OrphanCARE said it had 200 prospective parents on a waiting list to adopt babies and gave an assurance thatthere will be no legal repercussions for those who leave their babies at the hatch. “Mothers who have babies outof wedlock are often in a fragile state. They don’t know where to turn to or what to do with their babies,”OrphanCARE president Adnan Mohamad Tahir was quoted as saying. In the country where sex is the taboo topic,it’s likely that unwanted pregnancy will continue to happen. Ms. Mohamad Tahir hoped that the new baby hatchwill give some children at least a better start in life.
