Roman Gods and Goddesses A long time ago, people didn’t know much about the world. When they experienced somethingdifficult, they asked the gods for help. The ancient Roman believed there were many gods above the sky and that each of them took care of some animals or plants.  For example, Apollo was the god of the sun. People believed he used his chariot to make the sun go up every day and take it down at night. Apollo was really handsome. Many young girls loved him, and some even wanted to take him as their husband. Apollo had to work every day, and he lived a really busy life.  The Romans also believed that Ceres was the goddess of plants. She made trees, flowers, and other things grow well for farmers. She would bring enough rain and good weather, so she was very important to farmers.  The name “Jupiter” means “father.” He was the greatest god because he ruled all of the other gods and people. He was also the god of light and sky. His English name is “Jove.” If you hear someone say “By Jove,” he’s talking about Jupiter! Some people may not believe in the Roman gods or goddesses, but they are really important to the English language.  *ancient古代的 chariot戰車
