Starting on May 1,China’s largest coastal city will host Expo 2010. An expo—short for “universal exposition”—is a large public event that showcasesinnovations in culture and technology. Until the 1960s, this regular event, which normally lasts for six months, was known as the World’sFair. Expo 2010 Shanghai is the latest in this series of global exhibitions, whose history stretches back over 150 years.Originating from a French tradition of national exhibitions, world’s fairs began in Europe in the nineteenth century. Over the years, world’s fairs and expos have showcased all sorts of new technological developments, from ice cream cones and nylon stockings in 1904to television and tape recorders in 1939. On a few occasions, structures built for these events have gone on to become famous landmarks.Among the best known of these are the Eiffel Tower in Paris and Seattle’s Space Needle. These days, the main feature of an expo is thenational pavilions, where participating nations create their own unique displays.Modern expos tend to follow a particular theme; this year, it is “Better City, Better Life.” As almost half the human race now lives intowns and cities, organizers felt that a focus on strategies for living in future urban environments was an appropriate theme. Urban life is asubject of global interest that concerns people of all nations, regardless of their level of development. That is why some two hundredcountries are participating in the expo, and up to 70 million visitors are expected before it ends on October 31.Taiwan is an enthusiastic participant in Expo 2010 and has spent several months constructing a 1,400-square-meter pavilion. Itscenterpiece is a huge LED ball that represents the ‘heart” of Taiwan. Multimedia displays include projections of the island’s spectacularscenery onto a lantern-shaped screen. The pavilion is surrounded by a pool representing the Pacific Ocean, and people will be able to lightsky lanterns on a central platform. The lanterns symbolize a wish for harmony in the world and a hope that the inhabitants of future citieswill still feel close to nature. Other countries are just as keen to promote themselves at the expo. India is bringing a group of top Bollywood stars to put on aspecial show, Denmark has shipped its famous Little Mermaid statue for display, and most other participants have spent large amounts ofmoney on their respective pavilions.
