問題詳情

二、閱讀測驗     Humanbeings have been cutting down the world's forests for thousands ofyears. One civilization after another has used trees to build housesand ships, and for fuel. Once a forest has been devastated, it willtake a very long time for it to recover. Countless trees in Europeand the Middle East were destroyed long ago, and have never beenreplaced.    Unfortunately, global deforestation has increased dramatically in recent decades.Tropical vegetation on South America and Southeast Asia is being cutand burned at a substantial rate. The land is needed for large andsmall scale farming. Most people know of the fires that were set toclear land in Southeast Asia of trees in 1997. They got out ofcontrol and covered much of the region in smoke. In Indonesia alone,an area at least the size of New Jersey was burned. In Taiwan, economic growth and population pressures have contributed to theblight of large-scale deforestation, although conservation policiessince 1991 have reduced the problem to some degree.    Deforestationmeans more than just losing trees. It has a strong effect on theenvironment. Many living creatures depend on the trees, so when thetrees disappear, the animals die off as well. Clean water and air arealso lost, as well as abundant materials that could includemedicines. Native peoples have their lives disturbed and face a grimfuture. Most importantly, deforestation leads to the increase ofcarbon dioxide in the air.CO2 is a greenhouse gas, socutting down trees contributes to the danger of climate change.
