二、閱讀測驗:每格 2 分,共 10 分。 In Greek mythology, laurels represented Apollo, the god of the sun. We can see him put on laurel wreaths in many pictures. Why did laurels become his favorite? The reason was a girl named Daphne. It was said that Daphne was Apollo’s first love. She was a good huntress. She was young, beautiful and independent. Shedidn’t want to marry, so she refused every young man’s proposal. Her father, the god of the river, Peneus, often asked her, “When canI have my grandson?” She answered, ”Oh, Father! I don’t want a husband. I want to go hunting like Artemis, the goddess of themoon.” He would yield and she would go hunting in the woods again. One day, when Apollo drove his golden chariot around the world in the sky, he saw the beautiful Daphne hunting in the woods andfell in love with her right away. He started to run after her. Daphne saw a handsome young man running to her. She was so afraidand started running, too. Apollo said, ”Don’t be afraid. I’m Apollo. I love you,” but Daphne didn’t stop and kept running. Although Daphne was an excellent runner, Apollo was even faster. She soon felt his breath on her neck. Fortunately, she sawher father’s river and screamed, ”Help, Father! Help!” Then she couldn’t move from her toes to head. She changed into a tree— alaurel. Apollo was very sad. He made a laurel wreath. He put it on his head, so he could remember his first love and she would bealways a part of him. That’s why Apollo always wears a laurel wreath in many pictures. --Adapted from Mythology, Hamilton phpQkWXSA
