VI. Reading Comprehension 10%     Whalesare facing the crisis of disappearance. It is humans that mercilesslyslaughter the whales to satisfy their greed for money. The whalehunters use them to make perfume, soap, shampoo, animal feed, andindustrial oils. Killing them is a modern business with factoryships, helicopters, and harpoons that explode inside the whales. Theydie very slowly in extreme pain. Some ships kill every whale they canfind, even the mothers and babies. Then there are no young whales togrow up and bear more young.    Forseveral years, millions of people all over the world have awakened tothe necessity of protecting the existence of whales. Finally, at aninternational conference in 1986, the United Nations determined toprohibit all commercial killing of whales, but a few countries likeJapan and Russia still hunt them. The Japanese especially insist onkilling whales because their meat is considered as the most exclusiveand expensive dainty in high-class Japanese restaurants.

     Itis not necessary to kill whales. There are other products to useinstead of whale oil and whale meat. If the killing continues, thiswonderful animal, which took millions of years to develop, will begone forever. In only a few years, there will be no more whales inthe world.
