V. Reading Comprehension (3%)    Baseball lovers often boast(誇) that baseball is the traditional American game. They point to its long history in the country to prove it. These baseball fans’ beliefs are right; in fact, many fans do not completely understand baseball’s past. As early as 1866, Charles A. Peverelly wrote “The game of baseball has now surely become the leading feature of the outdoor sports of the U.S.” Meanwhile, other modern sports were just getting started. Football was just developing and basketball was not invented until 1891. Peverelly went on to say that baseball “especially suited” to the American people. By this he meant that it was an intense sport. The game is conducted in a few hours with few pauses. Besides, Peverelly considered baseball to be a moral sport. It did not provide a negative influence on children or teach them poor sportsmanship. He also observed that , unlike other sports, baseball fans always included a huge number of women.    Baseball is loved by millions of people around the world. In the 1870s, people in Canada and Cuba started playing baseball professionally. During the 1920s and 1930s, Australia, Japan and Mexico also got in touch with the excitement. The Japanese adore the sport so much that that their teams have been seen as excellent as those of the U.S. The trend reached Taiwan in the 1990s and soon Taiwan has its professional leagues. Indeed, there are great baseball geniuses in Taiwan. Many of the Taiwanese professional pitchers are now major players in the strongest Japanese and North American teams.
