(V) 閱讀測驗 20%(1)The Legend of 1900, shot by the legendary Italian filmmaker Guiseppe Tornatore, maker of Cinema Paradiso, is based on a monologue by Alessandro Baricco. The Legend of 1900 is the story of a unique boy’s journey to manhood, never stepping foot on dry land.On January 1, 1900, a small baby boy is found abandoned on the Virginian, a transatlantic ocean liner bound for America. The mechanic who finds him names the boy Danny Boodman T.D. Lemon 1900; 1900 for short. With passion and his prodigious talent for music at a young age, 1900 teaches himself to play the piano without being able to read the notes. He captivates people with his ability and soon becomes a virtuoso whose reputation spreads beyond the confines of the ship. Even the famous jazz piano player, Jelly Roll Morton, gets on board for a challenge because he has heard rumors about the greatest piano player in the world living on a ship. Morton loses the piano duel. 1900 befriends Max in 1926, but never leaves the vessel, even when presented with the opportunity to fashion a new life with a pretty immigrant girl.Having served as a hospital ship and transport in World War II, the Virginian is scheduled to be scuttled and sunk far offshore. Max attempts to convince 1900 to leave the ship. 1900 is simply too appalled by the size of the boundless world. And feeling that his fate is tied to the small ship, the only home he has known, 1900 makes his own choice. In the end, the Virginian blows up and sinks, presumably with 1900 still aboard.
