(二)My idea of the werewolf is based solely on television series and young adult novels.But from what I can tell, life as a werewolf is both physically painful and annoying.You’ve got the whole full moon thing to deal with, and then you’ve got this entirewerewolf family always meddling in your own business. That’s actually what Bitten is ina nutshell. Elena Michaels is the lone female werewolf in existence, as she attempts toleave her pack behind and start a new life in a new city. She wants nothing to do withbeing a werewolf, but since life isn’t always fair, Elena rarely gets what she wants.       Bitten has something that most of its competitors do not: the wisdom of age. Unlikemost other TV series involving werewolves, Bitten isn’t set in a high school and thereare zero teenagers in sight, which automatically gives the series a leg up.The show’sfocus on men and women who aren’t in the midst of hormonal meltdowns means there’smuch less angst. It also means Bitten isn’t burdened by the typical coming-of-age storythat’s part and parcel of many of today’s supernatural dramas. The fact that Elena hasbeen a werewolf for some time before the series even begins cuts out the need for herorigin story, which is refreshing to see.      But despite being adult-oriented, Bitten suffers from a weak plot. Elena’s reluctanceto return to the ancestral home of her pack in the wake of a dead body turning up in thepack’s backyard is mostly a cliché. Besides, there is a large number of werewolves in thepack and it is hard to tell them apart due to their lack of distinctive personalities. Theepisode also hinted at something that happened between Elena and her ex-boyfriendClay that acted as a catalyst for her departure from the ancestral home, but to me whathas been going on between the two isn’t that fascinating.       Of course, that is not to say Bitten won’t be successful. It’s just that after watchingthis first episode, I don’t think viewers who aren’t naturally drawn to supernatural showswill find the show compelling enough to keep watching. Overall, Bitten isn’t addinganything new to a television slate that’s slowly becoming overrun with supernatural andfantasy shows. If the series wants to make a name for itself, it needs to add more action,and give the pack members characteristics and personalities that can better impress theaudience.
