IV. 閱讀測驗 10%51-53題為題組【A】Role-playing games first became popular in the 1970s, thanks to the trend-setting Dungeons and Dragons. According to the participants, role playing means one doesn’t just get to enjoy a story --- he gets to create one. He is the story. Geoffery Zatkin, a developer behind EverQuest, an online role-playing game released two years ago and featured by the most glorious 3-D graphics yet, explained the magic of the fantasy world, “Such games bring people into contact with one another. Aside from communication, everything else is secondary. We built a world in which you can’t win and neither will it end. We were trying to mimic life.”In most online role-playing games, socializing with other players and forming relationships or “alliances” with them is a key to success. Studies have established that online relationships can be intense and close as those in real life. Given the heightened danger and excitement that exist in the imaginary world, and the need to enable allies to survive, it is common for friendships to grow rapidly. Occasionally, the need to protect oneself against some bloodthirsty killers only makes trustworthy friends even more precious. As such games are better able to reproduce the subtle complexity of real life, they will become far more addictive. Life, after all, is an addiction itself that few people give up willingly.
