問題詳情

(B) Ebonics is often looked upon as “Black English,” or the style of speech used by African Americans. The word “Ebonics” is a mixture of the words “ebony” (black) and “phonics” (the study of sounds). Some consider it a general term which refers to all common expressions, slang, and altered (改變過的) pronunciation used by African Americans.Ebonics is usually used by this group of people on informal occasions. Ebonics originates from the African language, and it’s an interesting side of the African-American culture. On humorous American television shows, African Americans sometimes speak Ebonics to strengthen funny moments, call attention to a point, or reflect social classes.Usually, Ebonics can be recognized in several ways. First of all, people who speak it often drop some sounds. For instance, “working” sounds like “workin’.” Then, they use “ain’t” to replace “isn’t,” “have not” etc. Therefore, phrases like “Why you ain’t tell me?” means “Why don’t you tell me?” In addition, “Ima tell you....” is often heard, too. It means “I am going to tell you....”Some people think Ebonics is an inferior (較低等的) language because it is often used by those with low levels of education. However, it does follow a system. It isn’t just a lazy form of Standard English. Instead, it shows a different culture.
