問題詳情

The tractor beam, a common sight in science-fiction books and shows like Star Trek, is a beam that can grab spaceships and other objects remotely. The beams are frequently used by extraterrestrials in movies to abduct humans from Earth. Sounds crazy, right? Well, it could be entering the realm of reality soon.
Researchers from the University of Bristol in the UK and the Public University of Navarre in Spain have developed a tractor beam that uses high-amplitude sound waves to move, turn, and suspend tiny objects in the air without touching them directly. Right now, the tractor beam can only manipulate an object up to about four millimeters (mm) across. It uses sound waves from 64 small loudspeakers that transmit sound at a frequency of 40 kilohertz (kHz), a level that humans are unable to hear. The sound waves can form many “shapes,” such as a base to hole an object in place, a cage to surround it, and tweezers to life and move it.
Asier Marzo, the project’s lead author, says the primary use for the tractor beam will have nothing to do with alien abduction but with the medical field. Sound cannot travel through the void of space, but it can travel through water and even human tissue. This means that tractor beams can potentially be used to manipulate blood colts, kidney stones, medical drugs, tiny tools used in surgery, and even cells inside the body, all without the patient being opened up.
