D. Reading Comprehension(每題 3 分,共 24 分) Article 1   In the spring of 2011, Taiwan was shocked by a major food safety scandal when it was learnedseveral food manufacturers had used a toxic plastic agent called DEHP in their products. Somecompanies had apparently been putting the agent in their goods for over 30 years. Consuming toomuch DEHP can cause serious damage to people's reproductive system. The food manufacturershad used DEHP as an additive because it is cheaper than other ingredients.   DEHP may have contaminated more than 500 food and beverage products in Taiwan, including fruit juices, sports drinks and bottled tea. The country's Food and Drug Administration(FDA) had not previously stopped those companies from using DEHP because it was not includedon the list of toxins for which the agency tests. So when the public found out some foods or drinksmight contain the dangerous substance, a panic broke out. In response, the government actedquickly to test a wide range of goods. It seized many of the suspicious products and preventedthem from being sent abroad. All in all, the government health workers checked the food andbeverage items of over 16000 producers and retail outlets. It was the largest food safety inspectionin Taiwan's history. Additionally, some executives at the companies responsible for illegallyadding DEHP to their products were arrested, and after further investigation, they may face longprison sentences.   People's confidence in the nation's food supply was clearly shaken by these events. And thescandal has spread to foreign countries as well, as Taiwanese foods and beverages are exportedaround the world. Many countries placed restrictions on Taiwanese products. For example, healthauthorities in Vietnam seized contaminated goods, while officials in China banned about a thousanddifferent Taiwanese products.   One especially unfortunate consequence of the food scandal is that it has seriously damagedTaiwan's reputation for reliable and safe food manufacturing. In the future, foreign countries arelikely to be much more suspicious of Taiwanese food and beverage products, hurting all localmanufacturers, even those who had nothing to do with the DEHP contamination.
