       Founded in 50 B.C., Maastricht is the Netherlands’ oldest city. Because of Maastricht’s strategic location, it has had to defend itself against armiesmany times over the years. Yet it has never suffered severe damage, so its old sites are still intact.
      For a unique experience, take a tour of the St. Pietersberg Caves. The caves were createdwhen rocks were dug out of Maastricht’s hills long ago and used for building purposes. During atour, you can learn about the many different purposes the caves have served over the years. You canalso see a chapel and painting on the walls, and learn why the cool caves are ideal for growingmushrooms.
