The"Seven Wonders of the World" is a title given to sevenancient monuments that were located in the area around the EasternMediterranean Sea. They were all described in books written by theancient Greeks. Of the original seven wonders, only the Great Pyramidof Egypt is still standing. However, many other wonders still existin places the Greeks knew nothing about.

 Thereare massive ancient structures in many parts of Asia. Everyone knowsabout the Great Wall of China, for instance. Another amazing site isthe vast complex of temples and buildings at Angkor, in the SoutheastAsian country of Cambodia. Built between the 8th and 12th centuries,Angkor was abandoned in 1432, and lay forgotten for centuries until aFrench explorer revealed it to the world in 1860.

   MacchuPicchu is the name of the "lost city" of the Incas in SouthAmerica. It sits on a mountainside in the Andes in Peru, at a heightof 2,430 meters. Deserted in the 16th century by the tribe that livedthere, it was forgotten until rediscovered in 1911 by the Americanexplorer Hiram Bingham.

  Anotherextensive ancient site that lay hidden for hundreds of years is thecity of Petra, which lies in modern-day Jordan, in the Middle East.Its many buildings, columns and statues are carved into the rocks ofthe Wadi Araha Valley. They are now a popular tourist sight.
