問題詳情

四、閱讀測驗 (每題 2 分,共 20 分)[1] John P. Allen is a leader in the field of biosphere research and technology. However, he is most well known for his work with Biosphere 2. The facility, constructed between 1987 and 1991, is a self-sustaining sphere designed as a closed agricultural living and working environment for humans.      The ultimate goal of biosphere projects like Biosphere 2 is to help people discover how to exist on planets that may otherwise be hostile to human biological processes. To that end, researchers and volunteers agreed to be sequestered in Biosphere 2 to test its practicality and usefulness. While inside, volunteers tried to rely solely on the air, plants and supplies created in the sphere to test how well biospheres can function as manmade habitats and ecosystems.     Allen's work paved the way for new experimentation and development in space colonies, but Biosphere 2's early efforts were crippled by various problems. It was difficult to balance oxygen and reuse carbon dioxide, which complicated biological concerns. However, interpersonal conflicts were also an issue. And unfortunately, human conflict cannot be resolved or explained in a laboratory. Such challenges prove that science may be capable of creating successful biospheres long before humans are capable of living in them.
