問題詳情

(B) Marriage ceremonies are big business in Taiwan, as the large number of wedding shops attests. If you spend anylength of time in Taiwan, you’re likely to be invited to a wedding. The wedding invitation is invariably red—a happycolor—and it usually brings with it the obligation to present money to the newlyweds. Therefore, it is often referred to as a“red bomb”.Should you receive a red bomb from a Taiwanese friend, you’ll be happy to know that the money you are expected togive is used to pay for the fabulous 10-course meal that will be served at the wedding party. You needn’t bring any othergifts, just the money. The money should be cash—not a check—and it must be placed in a red envelope. It must be redbecause a white envelope is a sign of death. Red envelopes should be used any time you give money to somebody, such asfor a birthday, a gift or even if you just owe it to them. Never give NT$4000 as the number four is taboo. The typicalamount expected these days is about NT$1000 per person. It’s OK to give more, but make sure that the second digit of thetotal amount is not an odd number because a married couple is an even pair—an odd number indicates that the couple willseparate. It’s OK to bring an uninvited friend with you, but be sure to put an extra NT$600 in the envelope for each guestand let the host know in advance so enough food can be ordered. Be sure to write your name on the envelope so thenewlyweds know who it’s from. Wedding parties do not last very long, usually just a little over an hour. Everyone tends to eat and run, allowing very little time for talking and socializing. Guests are permitted to take extra food home in plastic bags that the restaurantprovides.
