2. A Man Who Learns How to ForgiveThe following is a story about Larry Brown, a man who is willing to forgive, and live happily with a mendedheart. My name is Larry K. Brown, Jr. I am 33 years old, a prisoner at Waiawa Correctional Facility. I'm gettingtreatment to fix my addiction and my criminal conduct (犯罪行為), but most importantly to learn more aboutmyself.During my childhood and early adult years, forgiveness was a way to get back at someone. If someone didsomething to me, I would forgive them until they thought everything was alright, and then I would turn aroundand do it back to them twice as bad. For me, forgiveness was a tool for revenge. On January 1, 1981, my family had a house warming party in Waialua. The party started off well andeveryone was having a good time. Then all I heard was BANG.I remember that when I ran over to my dad, I thought he was sleeping. He was still alive and breathing at thetime, so I tried shaking him to wake him up. He grabbed me in his arms and told me he loved me. I fell backasleep in his arms. And the next thing I remember was the paramedics (醫護人員) lifting me off of him. Thenlater on that morning, I found out my dad and aunty died, and my mom was in the hospital fighting for her life.Since my father's death, I have felt nothing but hate for the man who did this to my family and me. I carriedthis bitter anger and frustration through my adult life. All I wanted to do was to meet up with this man somedayand pay him back for the pain he had caused. My negative thoughts led to negative behaviors, which led tocrime and prison. I now realized that it was all a vicious circle.Today, after the treatments I received in jail, I feel that I finally have forgiveness in myheart. It was not easy at all, but I know I want to be free of the hate that has been stopping mefrom pursuing the life I was wanted to live. Now, I consider myself lucky to be alive and Ihave come to realize that the vicious circle can be broken and that the power to do this is inside of me.Adapted from the story of Larry Brown in Hawaii Forgiveness Project, 2009
