問題詳情

Luxury goods are items that are usually very expensive but not necessary for the basic needs of life. Luxury goods are generally too expensive for normal people to buy, except the rich. Rich people buy luxury goods to show their property and power. However, this kind of spending is looked down upon by people of the “LOHAS” generation, or those who try to live a balanced and “green” lifestyle. One way in which the purchase of luxury goods can be discouraged is through a luxury goods tax. The government puts alarge tax on luxury goods such as furs, jewelry, yachts, and boats. This may not necessarily keep most wealthy people from buying these types of things, but it will make those who make the purchases contribute a certain part of their money to society. For example, Thailand charged a luxury tax on all forms of entertainment, and in U.S. some states put a luxury tax on very high-priced building or lands.Generally, the governments spend luxury taxes on social good, such as building or repairing roads, schools and hospitals. Therefore, by putting a luxury tax on high-priced items, the purchase of something quite meaningless creates something worthwhile.
