      When I was a child I had many toys, but the thing I remember best is three yards of gold-coloredsilk. This was my favorite plaything. My father had brought the material home one day, along withmany other things, after one of his trips abroad. When he asked me what I wanted, I chose this piece ofsilk. Not only was it beautiful to look at, but also it was soft and smooth to touch. The three yards ofgold-colored silk and I soon became inseparable. It was my passport into the world of fantasy. With it,I could become any character I had read or heard about by draping and twisting the silk into differentcostumes. One day I was Cinderella all dressed up for the ball, another day Little Red (Gold) RidingHood, and still another day Wonder Woman or someone from another planet. Sometimes I was a brideor a princess, and other times I was a ballet dancer or a famous actress. I was an Indian woman in a sari,a South Sea Islander, and even once an Eskimo. I was anybody I wanted to be.          Today, I can still remember the wonderful sense of escape that it gave me. All my childhood toysand games are long since gone, but somewhere in a box at the bottom of a closet, there is still three yardsof gold-colored silk.
