A Byronic hero basicallyhas the following characteristics: highly educated, emotional,sexually attractive, cynical, self-destructive, charismatic, andignoring rank of social class. In a sense, Lord Byron himself was atypical Byronic hero since he led a very furious life at the time,and his friend Percy Bysshe Shelley in some way shared thesecharacteristics. Both of them brought the unprecedented style inRomantic movement. Though Byron and Shelley were thought outlaws atthat time, their works outweighed their behavior. A Byronic hero isnot exactly a person who is morally worsened but destined to dosomething incredible and shocking.   TheByronic hero becomes the popular term in literary works, such asGothic novels or several pieces of poetry. Due to the overall stylein Romantic movement, the image of a Byronic hero was in fact quitecommon in that period. Lord Byron himself was actually acontroversial figure at the time. He joined the Greek War ofIndependence fighting against Ottoman Empire. Though he died soonafter this war, Greeks still deemed him a national hero. Byron’sworks represented the peak of Romanticism and he was thought aRomantic icon as well. Although Byron did not have flawlesspersonality, his brilliant works are still favored by millions ofreaders in the world now.
