IV. Discourse Organization (5%, 1% for each)    After Japan’s Fukushima nuclear accident, more and more Taiwanese have started to becomeaware of the problems caused by nuclear power plants. One of the most serious issues is nuclearwaste on Orchid Island (Lanyu), where the Tao people have lived for generations. The Lanyunuclear waste storage facility was built in 1982 and since then the radioactive waste has beentransferred to Orchid Island. __61__ Over 100,000 barrels of nuclear waste from the nation’sthree operational nuclear power plants have been stored at Orchid Island, the homeland of the Tao.The Tao are the most peace-loving people among the fourteen aboriginal groups of Taiwan, whichderives from their ocean-oriented heritages. __62__ Their social life is in accordance with thenatural principles. Furthermore, their social system is based on the observance of working togetherfor the benefit of all. __63__ However, such a temperate tribe is forced to accept the nuclearwaste which may pose a great threat to the Taiwanese people and their environment. The Tao’shealth and the environment of Orchid Island have been extremely threatened by the poisonousnuclear waste. It is said that the workers on the nuclear waste sites permit the dumping ofradioactive and polluted water into nearby seas where the Tao people do their fishing. __64__The Tao people feel that Taiwan’s government neglects their human rights. Therefore, in recentyears, Orchid Island’s “nuclear waste protest” has been in full swing. __65__ In a word, thenuclear waste dumping ground has been an “undying trauma” for the Tao as well as a painful“historical experience!”
