Alternativemedicine is also called unconventional medicine that is outside therealm of mainstream Western health care. Alternative medicineemphasizes therapies that improve quality of life, prevent disease, and address conditions that conventional medicine has limited successin curing, such as chronic back pain and certain cancers. Proponentsof alternative medicine believe that these healing methods are saferand more natural and have been shown through experience to work. Incertain countries, alternative medical practices are the most widelyused methods of health care. Nevertheless, many practitioners ofmodern conventional medicine believe these practices are notscientific.   Acupuncture,a Chinese traditional medicine dating back to 3000 to 2000 B.C.,involves stimulating specific points in the body for therapeuticpurposes. Puncturing the skin with a needle is the usual method ofapplication, but acupuncturists may also use heat, pressure, frictionor suction to stimulate acupuncture points. Acupuncture was developedin response to the theory that there are special meridian points onthe body connected to the internal organs and that vital energy flowsalong the meridian lines(經脈).According to this theory, diseases are caused by interrupted energyflow, and inserting needles restores normal flow. Acupuncture is oneof the most thoroughly researched and documented alternative medicalpractices. Scientific studies of acupuncture show that the techniqueis effective at relieving nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy.Good evidence suggests that it also relieves nausea during pregnancyand pain after dental surgery.   Reflexologyis a healing system in which specific points on the feet or hands, known as reflex points, are manipulated to bring about changes inother parts of the body. These reflex points are believed tocorrespond to every major organ and area of the body. It is based onancient Asian medicine in which a life force circulates throughoutthe body, connecting one part to another; when this energy isblocked, disease develops. By stimulating reflex points on the feetor hands, reflexology is thought to restore the energy flow and thebody's own natural ability to heal itself. During a reflexologysession, the therapist uses fingers, thumbs, and palms to stroke orlightly press the reflex points on each foot. Where energy blocks arefound, the reflexologist applies deep pressure for seconds or minutesuntil these deposits are broken down.
