問題詳情
Though most people think Edison invented the light bulb, it was actually a British chemist called Joseph Swan who made the first working electric light in 1878. When Edison tried to sell light bulbs in Britain, the courts made him take Swan as a partner. This was because Swan had a patent on the invention. The British government considered that Swan was the inventor of the light bulb, and wouldn't let anyone else use his idea. If you invent something new and want to stop other people stealing the results of your hard work, you can apply to the government for a patent. When an inventor asks for a patent, the Patent Office, which is a department of the government, will first examine the invention to see if it is really new. They will look through their records to make sure that no one has already patented this idea. This process can take a long time, and sometimes can be difficult: it is not always easy to tell whether an invention is a new idea, or is just a version of something that already exists. If the Patent Office approves a patent, then the inventor can be sure that no one in that country can use his or her invention unless the inventor agrees. Anyone who did would be breaking the law, and would receive a fine. The fines can be very high-if someone steals an invention and makes millions, the courts can take all of the profits and give them to the real inventor. This legal protection lasts for 20 years-but it costs a lot to apply for it, too (at least $5000 in the U.S.A.), so you should be sure that your invention will make money before you start!
