From 1991 it is a requirement for new ships to apply a protective coating tothe structure in water ballast tanks which form part of the hull boundary, and, since 2008,all dedicated seawater ballast tanks are to be coated during construction in accordance withthe PSPC(Performance standard for protective coatings for dedicated seawater ballasttanks in all types of ships and double-side skin spaces of bulk carriers), adopted by theMaritime Safety Committee by resolution MSC.215(82).
