Cosplay comes from the mixing of the words “costume” and “play.” It beganas the act of dressing up as characters from Japanese animation, comic or video games,such as Pokemon. Nowadays it includes many more characters from Westernfantasy or science fiction movies, such as Harry Potter, Star War and The Lord ofthe Rings. Cosplay was firstly an “eccentric” hobby of Japanese teenagers in the 1980s,who would gather in groups dressed up as their favorite characters, especially aroundthe area Harashoku in Tokyo. Soon there were special cosplay festivals, whichattracted thousands of people near or far. The hobby became popular in other Asiancountries, and reached the West in the 1990s. Many American cities like Bostonhold large cosplay festivals now every year. Some cosplayers are interested in design and fashion and spend a lot of timecreating beautiful and stunning costumes. Others are interested in acting and love to“become” their favorite characters. As a result, many cosplay meetings have specialcontests. One is for the best costume, and another is for the best small play ofcosplay characters. Yet, most cosplayers are just having fun dressing up as theirchosen characters.
