V. Reading Comprehension (24%)
(A)Conjoined twins, often known as Siamese twins, are born with some part of their bodies attached to each other. It doesn’t happen often, as conjoined twins occur once out of every 200,000 live births. There are two theories on what causes their bodies to become attached, but the answer isn’t clear. There are different types of conjoined twins. The most common are when the twins are joined somewhere on the torso.Surgery to separate conjoined twins can range from simple to complex, depending on where the bodies are joined. When certain organs are shared, surgery can be more difficult and somewhat risky. In the past, there were fewer surgical options for conjoined twins. Twins that could have easily been separated in modern times had to live with their condition. This was the case with the world’s most famous conjoined twins. Chang and Eng Bunker were twins born in Siam, what is now known as Thailand. Their skin and flesh were joined at their chests, as were their livers. The brothers became famous by traveling the world in their own show, where spectators marveled at the strange sight. It was because of Chang and Eng’s fame that the term Siamese twins became common. An extremely rare type of conjoined twins occurred recently in Khartoum, Sudan. Two girls were born joined at the head, a condition called craniopagus, with only one in 10 million surviving to infancy. The girls from Khartoum managed to beat these incredible odds. The girls’ parents asked the British charity, Facing the World, to help them organize the surgery. The girls were flown to a hospital in London, and the surgeons worked for free. The doctors say the surgery was difficult, but it appears to have been a success. The girls are leading happy lives, separately, back home in Sudan. (教一)
