41至45題為題組     Though known for his realistic description of rural life in New England, Robert Frost was actually born in San Francisco in 1874. When Frost was eleven, his father died. The family then moved to New England. Frost took to reading and writing poetry during his high school years and published his first poem in the school magazine. After graduating from high school in 1891, he attended Dartmouth College and later Harvard but never received a formal degree. He married Elinor Miriam White in 1895 and left school to support his family. He worked at various jobs, including running a farm in Derry, New Hampshire. Then in 1912 he sailed with his family to England, where his first book of poetry, A Boy’s Will, was published the next year. The poet Ezra Pound not only gave it a favorable review but also helped get his second book, North of Boston, published. By the time Frost returned to the United States in 1915, his reputation was well established. He is the only poet to have received the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry four times. As one of the best-loved American poets, he was invited by John F. Kennedy to read a poem at his inauguration in 1961. According to President Kennedy, Frost “has bequeathed his nation a body of imperishable verse from which Americans will forever gain joy and understanding.”
