問題詳情

五、閱讀測驗: 5%The city of Pompei was destroyed when the volcano Mt. Vesuvius erupted in the year 79 A.D. Without warning, the volcano buried Pompei under a deep blanket of ash. Pompei stayed buried for 1,600 years, before it was finally discovered again. The re-discovery of Pompei was very important for our understanding of what life was like in a busy city thousands of years ago. During that time, Pompei was known as the pride of the Roman Empire. Wall paintings called frescoes show a lot of images from everyday life. Known for their beauty, Pompei’s frescoes also explain much about the history of the area (near what is now the modern day city of Naples, Italy).Pompei had a big market place, called the Forum. Words written on doors and walls show that there were many shops, small restaurants, and places selling wine and cold drinks. There were theaters for performances, places to play sports, and even a big hotel. The streets were straight and made of stones, with houses and shops on either side.Pompei was a peaceful place, and the people there weren’t prepared when Mt. Vesuvius started shaking the ground and sending ash high into the sky. They were unable to escape, and the bodies of men, women, and children can still be seen lying where they fell and were buried under the ash. While it may have been a great city, Pompei was no match for the power of nature.
