Nonetheless, some officialsnow fear that it is hurting the country’s image in the West, wheredragons are considered evil. This had led to a debate within Chinaabout how to preserve the country’s cultural heritage whileimproving perceptions abroad.   In2006, the dragon controversy began when a professor in Shanghaisuggested that China relinquish the dragon as its national symbolbecause of its negative image in the West. The government’srejection of the dragon as a possible mascot for the 2008 Olympics inBeijing only elevated these concerns.   Regardlessof such worries, the dragon remains important to most Chinese, whoview it as the ancestor of their nation. Instead of abandoning thedragon, another professor recommended that people begin calling it“loong,” the word in Chinese character, as a way to distinguishit from the fire-breathing Western interpretation. He argued thatthis would emphasize the positive aspects of the Chinese dragon,which include bringing needed rains. Others have advocated theadoption of a new national symbol, such as the panda or the pig, butthese options are unpopular among most Chinese.   Thedragon debate in China reveals its increasing importance around theworld. As China continues to expand, more foreigners will payattention to what it does. The way that the Chinese deal with theirdragon will determine how other people view the country for manyyears.
