問題詳情

(III)      People in Spain (西班牙) may have the funniest tradition of celebrating the new year. On New Year’s Eve, thousands of people go to the Plaza del Sol in Madrid (馬德里). They are not waiting for a ball to drop like in New York City. Instead, they are waiting for the town clock to make ringing sounds.     When it is close to midnight, everyone takes 12 grapes (葡萄) in their hands, and each grape means a wish for good luck. At each of the twelve chimes (鐘響), people put a grape in their mouths. Twelve seconds later, all the people welcome the new year with the grapes in their mouths. If people can finish their grapes by midnight, they will have good luck all year round. Yet, most people can’t because it’s difficult to finish so many grapes in time.     This tradition began about 100 years ago. At that time, the king had a lot of grapes, so he decided to give them to his people as a present on New Year’s Eve. Therefore, Spanish people have continued the tradition every year from then on.
